THE TIMERA

- ELLERY D. MARGAY

I would seize Time, and hold on tight
Dig desperate nails into its hide
Grasp its tail and bind its eyes
Tear its wings so it cannot fly
And loose its plumes in stark twilight

But Time, it is no plodding beast
Or feathered bird with wings to seize
It floats aloft on changing winds
And feeds where all begins and ends

It lurks among red autumn leaves
And stirs the short-lived buds of spring
There is no hide to which to cling
No beating heart or fur-clad limb

Spineless serpent, ravening wraith
Ever delving neat black graves
And, in darkness, slithering past my ear
Whispering that the end is near
I’ll never catch you, so I fear
